NEWS: Royal Distributing and Michael Leon Celebrate 10th Year of Roadracing Together

Thursday, May 25, 2017

Veteran racer Michael Leon will once again represent Royal Distributing in the 2017 Canadian Superbike Championship.  This will mark the 10th season that Leon will compete under the Royal Distributing banner.  The team’s program will be very similar to last year, with Michael competing on the 2016 BMW S1000RR Superbike that he rode to 4th place overall in the Mopar Canadian Superbike Championship and won the RACE Superseries Pro Superbike Championship.

The long relationship between Leon and Royal Distributing began in 2008, when he raced for the KTM Canadian Thunder Factory effort which was sponsored by Royal Distributing alongside the KTM Canadian Motocross team.    Since then, Michael has received support from the large motorsport apparel and accessory retailer.  “John Mochrie and Scott Spark have made it a pleasure to represent Royal.  They are huge motorsports fans they really enjoy seeing their presence out there, from Roadracing to Motocross, Snowmobile racing and even auto racing.  It have been fun to keep such a long relationship, which is rare in motorsports.  They are great people to work with and reperesent.” commented Michael.

Another long relationship for Leon is the one with Pro 6 Cycle and Dunlop tires.  Michael will defend the #1 plate in Shannonville’s RACE Superseries riding on Dunlop N-Tec slicks, which he used to win each Superbike race in that series in 2016.  The RACE Superseries is an open tire championship that allows competitors to choose whichever brand they wish.  Pro 6 Cycle will continue their BMW demo program which offers BMW S1000RR demo rides to qualified track day riders at Pro 6 Cylce track days.  Riders should reserve in advance if they wish to try the demo bike.

A new team sponsor is Bell Helmets. Michael will wear the new Race Star helmet during the 2017 racing season.

Kyle Blakely of Windmill Motorsports will be returning as crew chief.  It will be a busy summer in the Blakely household.  Michael would like to congratulate Kyle and his wife Lindsay, who are proud parents to baby Madison who arrived in March.  This will be the third season that Kyle and Michael will work together.

“I can’t wait to get started.  It’s going to be very competitive this year.  I’m going to try to focus on getting up to speed earlier in the race weekends so that we don’t have to play catch up.  I look forward to seeing everyone at the track this summer!”, commented Michael.

The Mopar Canadian Superbike Championship season kicks off this weekend, May 26-28 at Shannonville Motorsports Park.  The event is sponsored by the Trenton Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC). Military personnel and first responders will enjoy a 50% discount on event tickets.
