Head tuner, Guy Martin of Martin Brickwood Performance, had worked extremely hard, right up to the last minute to return the team’s Ducati 1198S to working order. The damage from the round 3 crash had been extensive. The final parts were only received the morning before practice began. With hard work, Guy and MBP Mechanic “Curly”, had the bike ready to go at the track Friday morning.

Unfortunately, the weekend plan went of the rails when Michael crashed once again. The crash occurred on the lap after Michael had passed Andrew Nelson, who was riding a borrowed 600, for 4th place in the Saturday Superbike heat race. Ironically, the crash happened in turn 5, which is the same corner as Fabi’s turn 4, where Michael crashed at the previous event. Although, it is a fast corner, damage to the bike from this lowside was much less serious than the previous round’s highside crash.

Michael was not able to participate in the Thunder and Sportsman heat races on Saturday afternoon, and had to start at the back of the grid in Sunday’s finals. The crash left Guy and trackside tuner Carlos Carrascosa with plenty to do Saturday afternoon. Once again, with hard work from Guy and Carlos, the team was ready to go Sunday morning.

In Sunday’s Liquid Thunder final, Michael was able to chase down Derek Vammus, but was not able to make a pass for the win. Derek was riding a Ducati 1098. The Heavyweight Sportsman was won by class rival Jim Proulx, who led from flag to flag, with Derek second, and Michael in third.

As a side note, Michael looked great all weekend, sporting a brand new set of custom made Nexo Sports leathers. The new leathers escaped the crash unscathed, as they were safe and sound in the Bickle trailer at the time, having a patch added. Also, Michael was wearing a new Cerwinski Carbon model Bell helmet, thanks to Outdoor Gear Canada.

The Royal Distributing / MBP Superbike Team is scheduled to return to action at Shannonville’s Pro track at Round 5, to be held September 4-6, where the team hopes that Michael will back on pace in his usual form.

The Royal Distributing / MBP Superbike Team would like to thank Royal Distributing, Martin Brickwood Performance, Dunlop, Pro 6 Cycle, Nexo Sports, Camo Customs, Eurocorsa, Zard, Speedymoto, MRA Windscreeens, Bell Helmets, Armour Bodies, Accelerated Technologies and CVR Motors

L’équipe Royal Distributing / MBP Superbike remercie Royal Distributing, Martin Brickwood Performance, Dunlop, Pro 6 Cycle, Nexo Sports, Camo Customs, Eurocorsa, Zard, Speedymoto, MRA Windscreeens, Bell Helmets, Armour Bodies, Accelerated Technologies et CVR Motors.

The above photos were taken by S. Komes. The Ducati gets some air time as it follows Michael, tumbling through the grass at the exit of turn 4. MJ Boucher looses the front after running onto the grass.

The asphalt in Shannonville’s Fabi track turn four is still as hard and unforgiving as ever. Royal Distributing / MBP Superbike rider Michael Leon was reminded of this during a spectacular highside crash on the opening lap of the Round 3 Superbike final held on Sunday June 20th. Michael had just moved into 5th position and lost rear traction in the first left hand corner. Unfortunately, Honda rider, Marie-Josée Boucher was caught up in the incident and crashed as well. Fortunately, both riders were able to walk away from the incident. Thanks to some good luck and his top quality Bell helmet, back protector and leathers, Michael is very bruised and battered but sustained no serious injuries.

In earlier action, Michael won the Liquid Thunder and Heavyweight Sportsman races, setting new lap records of 1:05.374 and 1:04.420 seconds, respectively. So far this season, he has a perfect record in those support classes. Michael had qualified 5th for the Superbike race in the Saturday afternoon heat race.

The crash was particularity heartbreaking for the team as Head Tuner Guy Martin and his good friend Dave Smith had recently travelled to GMD Computrack Ontario, located in Toronto, to have the Ducati 1198S’ frame geometry corrected by Adrian Baird. The bike’s evil handling personality was exorcised and with a straight frame, the team was hoping for good results. The team would like to thank Adrian for his efforts. Hopefully, the frame is still straight after such an extreme crash! Adrian and Dave are shown in this picture, in front of GMD Ontario, shortly after completing work on the Ducati.

The team would also like to thank Sandy Noce of Pro6Cycle / Dunlop for working closely with Head Tuner Guy Martin and Tuner Carlos Carrascosa to resolve the difficult handling issues experienced throughout Friday and Saturday Practice. The source of the problem was eventually discovered and corrected on Saturday afternoon, after which the bike began to work very well on track and the Ducati’s handling returned to normal.

Michael’s picture is featured in a news article at CMC Online at http://cmgonline.com/content/view/2640/81/ .

The team will start rebuilding the crash damage and will be back in action at RACE Round 4, to be held on July 18 at Shannonville’s Long track.

Michael would like to send personal thanks to his wife, Jennifer, and daughters Jaimie and Jayden, as well as his parents for coming out on Father’s Day to cheer him on; to Guy, Dave and Adrian for the hard work that was put in to prepare and straighten the frame; to Guy and Carlos for their hard work trackside; to Sandy and Sheena for the personal and technical support; and to Janet for making sure that the whole crew is fed and taken care of us.

The Royal Distributing / MBP Superbike Team would like to thank Royal Distributing, Martin Brickwood Performance, Dunlop, Pro 6 Cycle, Nexo Sports, Camo Customs, Eurocorsa, Zard, Speedymoto, MRA Windscreeens, Bell Helmets, Armour Bodies, Accelerated Technologies and CVR Motors.

L’équipe Royal Distributing / MBP Superbike remercie Royal Distributing, Martin Brickwood Performance, Dunlop, Pro 6 Cycle, Nexo Sports, Camo Customs, Eurocorsa, Zard, Speedymoto, MRA Windscreeens, Bell Helmets, Armour Bodies, Accelerated Technologies et CVR Motors.

Team Royal Distributing/MBP Superbike Team attended the 2nd round of the Race Superseries, held at Shannonville May 14-16. Friday practice and Saturday qualifying were difficult as the team’s Ducati 1198S began to expose an evil handling personality on Shannonville’s Long Track. In the faster sections of the track, the bike was unpredictable and would often go into a high speed wobble after setting the front wheel back down from small acceleration wheelies

These symptoms had not been as severe on the lower speed Nelson Track at Rd1, two weeks prior. Tuners Guy Martin and Carlos Carrascosa, along with rider Michael Leon, worked closely with John Sharrard of Accelerated Technologies and Sandy Noce of Pro6Cycle/Dunlop to cure the problems. The bike’s steering damper broke during Saturday practice, indicating that there was a bigger problem than the simple suspension setup issues.

The Ugly

On Saturday night, following Sandy Noce’s advice, the team measured the chassis geometry using a crude but precise method. Unfortunately, they discovered that the 1198S, which Guy Martin, of MBP, had purchased at a salvage auction, had a bent frame. The front and rear wheel were out of alignment by 25mm!

The Good

Now that the team knew what they were dealing with, the decision was made to make the bike easier and less fatiguing to ride, and to make to most of the situation. The rear of the bike was lowered to add stability. A switch from a soft rear Dunlop to a medium rear Dunlop would slightly reduce the rear grip and be more forgiving to the chassis.

Everyone’s hard work paid off. Michael was able to win the Liquid Thunder Race, setting a new lap record of 1:47.443 seconds, breaking the record of 1:48.351 seconds, that he had set last season. He also won the Heavyweight Sportsman race, setting a new lap record of 1:46.521 seconds, a personal best for Michael at the Shannonville long track. Michael had set the lap record in that class last season at 1:47.598. Michael managed 8th place in Pro Superbike, unable to keep the pace set by the front runners, with winner Jodi Christie setting his fastest lap at 1:44.219 seconds.

The motorcycle has been sent to Pro6Cylce, where arrangements are being made to have the frame straightened. The team looks forward to Round 3 to be held June 18-20. Please come and visit the team at the track.

Michael would like to extend thanks to Guy, Carlos, Sandy and John for their extra efforts this weekend to turn a bent Ducati into a fine race bike!

The Royal Distributing / MBP Superbike Team would like to thank Royal Distributing, Martin Brickwood Performance, Dunlop, Pro 6 Cycle, Nexo Sports, Camo Customs, Eurocorsa, Zard, Speedymoto, MRA Windscreeens, Bell Helmets, Armour Bodies, Accelerated Technologies and CVR Motors.

End Release. Return to News Page.

L’équipe Royal Distributing / MBP Superbike tent à remercier Royal Distributing, Martin Brickwood Performance, Dunlop, Pro 6 Cycle, Nexo Sports, Camo Customs, Eurocorsa, Zard, Speedymoto, MRA Windscreens, Bell Helmets, Arour Bodies, Accelerated Technologies et CVR Motors.

Michael Leon won both the Liquid Thunder and Heavyweight Sportsman races riding the Royal Distributing / MBP Superbike at the opening round of the RACE Superseries, held May 2nd. In the feature Superbike event, he rode to a 4th place finish. The 2009 Ducati 1198S motorcycle arrived from a California salvage yard just 8 days earlier and was transformed into a race bike by Guy Martin of MBP. The Ducati was equipped with Dunlop tires from Pro 6 Cycle. The team plans to compete in the remaining rounds of the series, with the main focus being the Superbike class.

The closing stages of the off season were hectic as the team learned, at the last minute, that a major sponsor could not continue to support the team. The owner of the bike that the team used last season would no longer be providing the motorcycle for the team to use. Fortunately, being the true race enthusiasts that they are, MBP owners Guy and Janet volunteered to buy another 1198S. Located in Montreal, MBP specializes in “everything and anything” Ducati.

The team is proud to announce that Royal Distributing continues to support the team as title sponsor. With three retail Superstores, and their well known catalogue, they have become a leader in aftermarket motorcycle, snowmobile, ATV parts and apparel. Royal Distributing has a strong history of supporting Canadian Motorsports including feature sponsorship of the Factory KTM Motocross team and support of race cars competing in the CASCAR series.

Tuner, Carlos Carrascosa, has joined the team and will be present throughout the season. Michael has worked with Carlos many times over the years, most recently in the 2008 season on the KTM Thunder team.

The effort will receive increased support from Pro 6 Cycle and Dunlop this season. Michael first tried the tires at last season’s round 4 and immediately liked the feedback from the front tire, setting lap records throughout the rest of the year.

Another returning sponsor is Mark Russo from Eurocorsa Performance who has agreed to continue with product support. The distributor of fine European aftermarket parts has provided a high performance Zard Exhaust system, Speedymoto rearsets, handle bars, and MRA windscreens.

Camo Customs has applied a new custom paint scheme to the team’s Armour Bodies bodywork. The team received many compliments on the new look throughout the weekend.

Outdoor Gear Canada has provided Bell helmets for Michael to wear.

New team sponsor Nexo Sports, will be providing Michael with a new set of custom leathers, boots and gloves this season.

The Royal Distributing / MBP Superbike Team would like to thank Royal Distributing, Martin Brickwood Performance, Dunlop, Pro 6 Cycle, Nexo Sports, Camo Customs, Eurocorsa, Zard, Speedymoto, MRA Windscreeens, Bell Helmets, Armour Bodies, Accelerated Technologies and CVR Motors.

L’équipe Royal Distributing / MBP Superbike tent à remercier Royal Distributing, Martin Brickwood Performance, Dunlop, Pro 6 Cycle, Nexo Sports, Camo Customs, Eurocorsa, Zard, Speedymoto, MRA Windscreens, Bel Helmets, Arour Bodies, Accelerated Technologies et CVR Motors.

The 5th round of the RACE Superseries, held under hot and sunny conditions on August 16th, at Shannonville Motorsport Park, was another successful event for the Royal Distributing / Michael Lanni MotorRacing / Martin Brickwood Performance Superbike Team.

As at the previous round, the team continued to use a stock 2007 Ducati 1098 motor to power their new 2009 Ducati 1198S, with hopes that Ducati will eventually replace the defective stock motor that failed at round 1, back in May, after only 103 kms of use.

Tuner Guy Martin (MBP) and rider Michael Leon, with help from suspension tuner John Sharrard of Accelerated Technologies continually improved the setup of the Ducati throughout Friday and Saturday, decreasing lap times with each session.

On Sunday, Michael won his first race of the day, Heavyweight Sportsman, setting a new lap record of 54.474 seconds, while pulling away from the field.

The high and low of the weekend came during the Pro Superbike race. During a charge from 7th to 4th place, Michael turned his best lap time of 54.057 seconds. This best time was just 0.178 seconds slower than the new lap record set during the race, by winning Kawasaki rider Karl Daigle (53.879 seconds) and faster than 3rd place finisher Andrew Nelson’s best time. Unfortunately, Michael crashed at low speed, in turn 5, ending his race. The highlight for the team is that the ability to turn competitive lap times in the Pro Superbike class is proof that the development of the Ducati is moving forward. The lowlight is that crashing is obviously not an effective way to get good results.

Fortunately, thanks to the Speedy Moto frame savers provided by Eurocorsa and the flexible Armour Bodies bodywork, damage was minimal. Guy Martin (MBP) was able to quickly change a broken foot peg and bent brake lever in time for the next race, Liquid Thunder, held just ten minutes after the completion of Superbike. Michael rode a strong race, winning and setting a new class lap record of 54.972 seconds.

Once again, the Dunlop tires used by the team proved to be very durable. With useful advice from Pro 6 Cycle regarding tire selection, the team was able to complete Friday practice, Saturday morning practice, Saturday’s afternoon heat races, Sunday morning practice, and the 3 races on Sunday afternoon, using only 3 new rear tires and 2 new fronts! Amazing, considering the intense heat and fast pace.

The team looks forward to their final scheduled race of the season, to be held September 25, 26 and 27, at Shannonville Motorsport Park.

The Royal Distributing / Michael Lanni MotorRacing / Martin Brickwood Performance Team would like to thank Royal Distributing, Michael Lanni, Martin Brickwood Performance, Federal Business Supply, Monette Sports, Ducati Montreal, Ducati North America, CVR Motors, Camo Customs, Eurocorsa, MRA Windscreens, Speedymoto, Accelerated Technologies, Department of Suspension, Armour Bodies, Pro 6 Cycles and Dunlop for their support.

End release. Return to News Page

Superseries. Rider Michael Leon competed in 3 classes riding the Guy Martin (MBP) prepared Ducati 1198S Superbike.

It was a successful outing with Michael winning in both the Liquid Thunder and Heavyweight Sportsman classes while setting new lap records in both races. Michael also finished 9th in the Superbike event.

It had been a difficult start to the season, with the team sidelined by a motor failure since round one. Unable to make arrangements with Ducati for a warranty replacement of the defective parts, the team purchased a used 2007 1098 motor in order compete in the remaining rounds. The team was pleasantly surprised that the engine worked so well, despite the fact that the stock 1198s fuel injection system was not tuned for the smaller 1098 motor.

Being essentially the first race of the season for the team, it was a busy weekend. There was much work to do to optimize a new chassis kit from Jason of Department of Suspension. The kit was the key in providing additional “feel” at mid corner, allowing rider Leon to decrease his best lap time by 7 second from the start of the weekend. Guy Martin of MBP and suspension tuner John Sharrard of Accelerated Technologies were on their toes throughout the suspension development process with no less than two rear shock rebuilds and multiple spring changes to optimize the new setup

New to the team’s formula were Dunlop tires. After Sandy Noce of Pro 6 Cycle convinced Michael to give them a try, he was easily convinced to make the switch. The Dunlop tires provide improved feel, especially from the front tire and increased life. The team was able to compete in all three of Sunday’s final races on the same set of soft compound tires.

The team looks forward to continuing to make progress at round 5, to be held August 16, and to improving their results in the Superbike class.

The Royal Distributing / Michael Lanni MotorRacing / Martin Brickwood Performance Team would like to thank Royal Distributing, Michael Lanni, Martin Brickwood Performance, Federal Business Supply, Monette Sports, Ducati Montreal, Ducati North America, CVR Motors, Camo Customs, Eurocorsa, MRA Windscreens, Speedymoto, Accelerated Technologies, Department of Suspension, Armour Bodies, Pro 6 Cycles and Dunlop for their support.
